Our F2 team travelled to Barcelona for the Spanish GP to get the triple-header going. A track where we have experience scoring big points and even wins, most recently in 2020 when Drugovich won the Feature Race. With lots of race experience on the Barcelona track, the drivers and team were eager to score good points.
Practice and Qualifying
Franco showed some great pace early in the weekend during the Free Practice on Friday, setting the third-fastest time of the grid. He must have thought “Well I can do that again”, which he did during qualifying. A P3 meant his best qualifying result as of yet in Formula 2! Dennis was still finding his pace on Friday, after setting the 12th fastest time during Practice and qualifying at P13 later that day.
Sprint Race
On Saturday, it was Sprint Race time. Franco lost a couple of positions, getting set back to P10, Dennis came into P11 after the opening lap. Dennis found his pace in lap 14 and overtook his teammate for P10, continued by a good move a few laps later to get into P9, additionally his final position. Franco remained in eleventh until the end of the race. The stewards got a busy Saturday afternoon as quite a lot of post-race penalties were given out, Franco and Dennis received track limit penalties and classified in P18 and P12.
Feature Race
The Feature Race didn’t go as expected for Dennis. After some great overtaking a day earlier, he tried the same on Sunday. He ended up in the gravel after getting in contact with multiple cars and had to retire the car. Franco on the other hand maintained his position well in on the first corners. After having taken his mandatory pitstop in the 12th lap, it was go-time for the Argentinian. Coming out on top after an intense battle for 8th. After others went for their pitstop, he came in second on lap 29. Holding his position until the end of the race, he got his best Feature Race finish of the season by finishing in P2!
The team showed great pace and we’re happy with the 18 scored points. Lots to look forward to, and the wait won’t be long. We’ll travel to Spielberg for the Austrian GP in a few days, which is the second race of the current triple-header.
