Mixed weekend at a wet Spa-Francorchamps

Formula 2 — July 29, 2024

Right before the summer break, the MP Formula 2 team travelled to Spa-Francorchamps, for the tenth round of the season. Friday started wet but the conditions changed over the day, however on Saturday, most sessions were declared wet. On Sunday the sun was shining but parts of the track dried very slowly.

Practice and Qualifying

Although it wasn’t raining during the Practice session on Friday, the track was still partly wet. Dennis and Franco were out early on track to make as many laps as possible, while moist drivers stayed in the pitlane. The MP drivers finished the Practice session in the top 10, Dennis in P6 and Franco in P8. The Qualifying times secured us again two starts in the top 10, where Franco qualified in P7 and Dennis in P9.

Sprint Race

Unfortunately, we did not see much racing on Saturday. The Sprint Race was set to start at 14:15 local time, but due to the heavy rain falling, it was postponed to 18:30. Dennis started the race from P2, and Franco was set to start behind him on the second row from P4. After 7 laps the race was red-flagged and wouldn’t be resumed, Dennis finished in second and Franco in P8. Half points were given out to the top 5.

Feature Race

We started the Feature Race on Sunday in a sunny Ardennes, but the track had not dried everywhere yet. Franco’s race didn’t last long, as he had to retire after a few laps due to a technical issue. With a different rear wing focusing on downforce, which turned out wasn’t the best strategy, Dennis finished the race in P12.

It’s now time for a much-needed summer break to analyze, reset and come back stronger. The team will travel to Monza in the final week of August.

Standings after the Belgian GP:
P6 Franco – 96 points
P8 Dennis – 83 points

Team standings:
P3 – 179 points
