Weug joins MP Motorsport for repeat F1 Academy campaign

F1 Academy — January 31, 2025

Ferrari junior Maya Weug will remain in the Grand Prix-supporting F1 ACADEMY™ series by joining MP Motorsport for a second Ferrari-supported campaign in 2025. Weug finished the 2024 season as a very competitive third in the final standings.

The Spanish-born Dutch racer has decided to team up with the outfit from her home country following a breakthrough victory in last season’s final round in Abu Dhabi. The win on the challenging Yas Island circuit came after she had completed a strong run of no less than seven podium finishes. Weug joins Alba Hurup Larsen as the second driver in MP’s three-car team for the single-seater series developed to champion the next generation of female talent.

“It’s a hugely exciting prospect to be able to race for MP Motorsport in the F1 Academy”, said Weug. “It’s actually the first time in my motorsport career that I will represent a Dutch team, so that alone is quite special. MP have done well in the first two F1 Academy seasons, always running up front and taking their share of wins, and it’s definitely my goal to add to those wins and challenge for the title. I very much look forward to competing in this year’s 14 races supporting the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends and showing the world what we’re made of.”

“We are delighted to welcome Maya into our F1 Academy team for this season”, said Sander Dorsman, MP Motorsport’s team principal. “She has been one of the frontrunners of this year’s championship, so with Maya leading the team it’s our firm intention to go for glory in 2025. Apart from that, it’s great that we continue to have a Dutch driver on our F1 Academy books. The team can’t wait to start working with her, as we continue to support our sport’s inclusive journey towards more diversity, not just among the drivers but among all the staff involved in running a professional motorsport outfit.”

Following a two-pronged first attack on the Italian and German F4 series in 2021, Weug joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2022 for another run in both championships, claiming 14th in the Italian series before being promoted to the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA) in 2023. In 2024, her first season in the F1 Academy proved to be highly successful, with one win, seven podiums and a fastest lap, while she also subbed in FRECA for two more races. Ahead of her single-seater career, Weug was a prolific karter in the FIA World and European Karting Championships at both OK Junior and OK level.
