We’ve reached the penultimate round in the FIA Formula 3 championship, driving on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Just like Formula 2, most of the sessions this race weekend were controlled by the rainy weather. Due to the rain, we did not drive much in the practice session but qualifying went much better with a P4 for Franco, P8 for Jonny and P14 for Mari.
Saturday mornings Sprint Race started on a damp track, but in general, all drivers did start on slick tyres. Mari went wide in the gravel of turn 1 during the opening lap and fell all the way back to P26. It was an eventful race with more than one long safety car procedure, with multiple drivers spinning or crashing due to the wet track. Although a total of 2 complete laps in green conditions have been driven, Franco finished in P6, Jonny in P5 and Mari came back to P17. After post-race penalties both Jonny and Franco made up one position, scoring good points for the team.
With Gabriele Mini receiving a penalty from the Sprint Race, Franco got to start the Feature Race from the third position instead of P4. The track was wet due to rain before the race, Franco and Jonny started on slicks and Mari on wet tyres. Out of 30 drivers, Mari and 10 others made the gamble to start on wets. This seemed to be the right choice as the track did not dry up as quickly as we thought. Franco managed to score one point by finishing tenth, Mari finished in 13 and Jonny P19.
Driver standings after round 8:
Franco P5 – 100 points
Jonny P16 – 30 points
Mari P19 – 13 points
Team standings after round 8:
P5 – 143 points
F3 will be back for the final round of the championship in the first weekend of September, when they race at The Temple of Speed, Monza.
