The final round of the Spanish F4 2024 season took place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a track known for its combination of fast and slow corners, as well as high tire degradation. Heading into the weekend, MP Motorsport had already secured the Teams’ Championship but faced a three-way battle for the Drivers’ Championship among Keanu Al Azhari, Mattia Colnaghi, and Maciej Gladysz—all part of the MP family.

Saturday morning greeted the paddock with heavy mist that cleared just in time for the cars to hit the track. Although the track looked wet, the stewards declared it clear. Our drivers used the session to fine-tune setups for the defining weekend ahead. Mattia topped the MP drivers with a P5, closely followed by Keanu in P7 and Griffin in P8. René finished P16, Lucas in P17, and Maciej in P26.
Qualifying 1
As the mist gave way to the typical warm Spanish weather, Mattia stormed to pole position, showcasing his pace as he fought for the championship. Griffin placed P3, Keanu in P5, René in P12, Lucas in P13, and Maciej in P14, setting up an intense start for our championship contenders in Race 1.
Race 1
The first race of the weekend started with all MP drivers making strong gains off the line. Keanu launched brilliantly from P5 to P2 before Turn 1, applying relentless pressure on Mattia, who led the field. Despite two safety car restarts, Mattia held firm to secure the victory, moving into the championship lead by three points.
Further down the order, Maciej made significant progress from his starting position, battling with René and Lucas for the final points-paying positions. Unfortunately, contact late in the race forced René to retire and Maciej could secure P3 in the standings.
Qualifying 2
Sunday morning brought a dry track and crucial laps as the second qualifying session determined the grid for Races 2 and 3. Mattia led the MP contingent with P5, followed by Keanu in P6 and Griffin in P7. Maciej secured P10, while Lucas and René started further back in P22 and P25, respectively, for Race 3.
Race 2
Griffin started from pole but unfortunately stalled at the start, opening the door for Mattia, who took the lead heading into Turn 1. Keanu followed closely in P3, determined to close the championship gap. However, extended safety car periods limited overtaking opportunities.
Keanu fought to move forward but was handed a five-second penalty for track limits, dropping him to P19. With the race finishing under safety car conditions, Mattia claimed his second victory of the weekend, extending his championship lead to 15 points heading into the final race.
Race 3
The championship showdown was set, with both Mattia and Keanu starting from mid-pack. The final race began with a spectacular charge from Keanu, who climbed from P6 to P3 in the opening laps. Meanwhile, Mattia dropped to P7 but maintained his composure, managing his tires and focusing on the bigger picture.
A multi-car crash brought out another safety car, further condensing the field. As the race restarted, Keanu tried everything to move up but couldn’t progress beyond P3. Meanwhile, Mattia’s strategic drive and points advantage secured him the 2024 Spanish F4 Drivers’ Championship in his rookie year.
Championship Success
This weekend, MP Motorsport added its seventh Teams’ Championship and sixth Drivers’ Championship to its record, cementing its status as the most successful team in Spanish Formula 4 history. Across the season, the team achieved 15 wins, 26 podiums, and 10 fastest laps, amassing a combined total of 828 points between its two teams and six drivers.
The reigning champion, Mattia Colnaghi, will next take on the legendary Macau Grand Prix, representing MP Motorsport in Formula Regional machinery.
