An MP equal at the top after round 3

Eurocup 3 — June 12, 2024

After a monopolized weekend in Spielberg, the Eurocup-3 team accompanied the Spanish F4 team to Portimao, Portugal, for what was the third round of the season. We were eager to keep the flow going and entered the weekend with high expectations.

Qualifying

In the first Qualifying Session, Bruno managed to secure the second position on the grid. Owen completed the top three by setting the third-best time. Emmo came in at P6, and Javier finished in the top ten. Dario finalized the MP grid with the thirteenth position. During the second session, Owen came out on top of all MP drivers, setting again the third fastest time. Emmo improved compared to the first session coming in at P5, and Javier got into the top ten at P9. Bruno qualified at P12 and Dario at P13.

Race 1

The race weekend didn’t start as expected for Emmo, who had to retire the car due to technical problems. All remaining drivers did either stay in position or improve. Bruno remained in second, securing the top spot in the standings, and Owen completed the podium in third. Javier and Dario both made up multiple positions and finished fifth and seventh consecutively.

Race 2

The second race was full of safety cars, which meant a lot of restarts as well. Many drivers lost positions due to the incidents, including ours. Owen got P5, followed by Emmo at seventh, Bruno at P8, and Javier in ninth. Dario dropped back considerably in the final laps and finished 21st.

Race 3

We were treated to a third race last weekend, due to the second race being cancelled in Spa-Francorchamps because of the weather. Again, multiple Safety Cars were deployed. The last one caused Bruno to fall back from the lead to P4 because of technical issues. Javier did manage to secure a podium spot finishing P2. Owen finished a strong weekend at P5, Emmo at P14, and Dario in sixteenth.

The results in Portimao did cause something pretty rare: the first, second, and third drivers were not only from the MP team but were tied in points as well. Bruno, Javier, and Owen all gathered 80 points over the first three rounds and are in full battle for the title! The Eurocup-3 championship will again join the Spanish F4 championship in Paul Ricard on the fifth of July.

Standings after the third round of the season:
P1 Bruno – 80 points
P2 Javier – 80 points
P3 Owen – 80 points
P7 Emmo – 45 points
P12 Dario – 12 points

Team standings
P1 – 209 points
