Last weekend marked the first-ever race of MP Motorsport in the Sunshine State during the Miami GP. This meant a lot of learning and practice to get to know the track quickly. The MP F1A team showed great progress after the start of the season a few weeks back in Jeddah.
Practice on Friday has taught us the ins and outs of the circuit, but looking at the results there was a lot to improve. Emely managed to set the 7th and 9th time of the grid, followed by Amna with a P12 and P8. Hamda was struggling a little bit on the street circuit and finished the Practice Sessions with a 15th and 10th position. She did completely turn the tables around on Saturday morning during Qualifying, and secured the third position for Race 1! Emely and Amna’s sessions left a bit to be desired, finishing at P14 and P15.
Race 1 got underway later that day, and Hamda maintained her third position well until the penultimate lap. She lost two positions while defending and eventually finished in sixth after the checkered flag was waved. Amna and Emely both made up a lot of positions, overtaking driver after driver. Amna finished at P8 and Emely followed in her footsteps a few positions back finishing eleventh.
During the second race, Emely and Amna were fighting for the thirteenth position on the grid, with Amna ending on top. She kept her flow and made up the most positions of the MP grid, ending the final race of the weekend at P8. Emely did not allow herself to be sidelined after falling back to P15 and pushed on to end up in the top ten. After the race Emely got a 5-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, demoting her back to P12. Hamda managed her place well, only losing two positions and ending Race 2 at P6.
Overall the MP team showed great improvements compared to the first round of the season and gained multiple points to take back to Europe. We are starting to prepare for the first European round of the season, going to Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya for the third race weekend of the 2024 season starting on the 21st of May!
Standings after the second round of racing:
7 Hamda – 30 points
9 Amna – 12 points
15 Emely – 0 points
5 MP Motorsport – 42 points
